No One Killed Jessica took its title from a Times of India headline and it is based on the case of Jessica Lal, a New Delhi aspiring model who was recognized as a celebrity bartender.

She was on the job at a large celebrity studded party in Delhi on April 29, 1999 when she was shot and killed. After the horrific incident, the murder case became headline news in India and was followed by years of coverage and speculation.

There were a lot of witnesses to the cold blooded murder, but very few people were willing to come forward and testify against the killer. Finally, after being acquitted, Mani Sharma, a Congressman's son, was convicted in December 2006 of the crime and put behind bars for life for having shot the model simply because she refused to serve him a drink after closing hours.

Rani plays the role of Meera, a reporter who is caught in the media frenzy that followed this case. Vidya Balan portrays Jessica's sister, Sabrina Lal who fights for justice for her dead sister. Shireesh Sharma plays Vinod Bhardwaj. The trailer for No One Killed Jessica promises a movie filled with drama, action scenes, moving characters and great on-screen presence by the film's leading ladies. 

Rani was the subject of a controversy when it became clear that she will be giving someone the finger in the movie, s the Censor Board has asked the movie makers to blur the actress’s middle finger in order to make the film suitable for families.

No One Killed Jessica hits theaters on January 7, 2011.
