Paathshaala attempts to answer many questions regarding today’s educational system in India. It tries to show what exactly is being done wrong in schools and how morals and ethics no longer play a role in teaching. Paathshaala challenges the wrong doings that happen in schools today that threaten the quality of children’s education.
The drama tells the story of a new English teacher, Rahul Prakash Udyayar (Shahid Kapoor), who starts teaching in a school called Saraswati Vidya Mandir on the outskirts of Mumbai. He immediately fits into the school and is liked by teachers and students alike. Rahul loves his job and is a very compassionate character. He wants to help his students at any cost. Rahul wants to see an education system following true spirit and growth.
Unfortunately, Rahul realizes that there is something wrong with the school. He learns that the School Manager (Saurabh Shukla) makes parents pay compulsory money in name of extracurricular activities. Students are even punished inhumanely when the parents do not fulfill the monetary demands of the school.
When Rahul unifies the teachers, played by actors Ayesha Takia, Sushant Singh and Kurush Deboo, against the school management, the Principal Aditya Sahay, played by Nana Patekar, defends the management’s decision. The teachers are shocked with this decision as Mr. Sahay has been responsible for building the school’s high reputation for the past 32 years.
Ayesha plays the role of Anjali Mathur, an ECA teacher, music teacher, and a hostel manager. She too loves her job and would do anything for her kids. She takes Rahul's side as they hope to reform the school system to make it a more free-spirited institution.
The situation gets worse when the school management starts to involve the media in the growth of the extracurricular department. The media demands students to participate in TV reality shows and other media tactics, which in turn begin to raise the students’ stress levels. This pressure leads to terrible consequences and the school’s situation soon becomes a national issue.
